Be On The Lookout For Cutworms
We were very pleased to have Martha Alexander return and visit us for the day. She and Rosemary Long thinned out the beets and radishes. Anne and Craig Anderson have assumed responsibility for the espalier bed and they had an energetic team clearing the weeds and other green things from beneath it. I am talking buckets of unwanteds. Heather Holmen, Marcia Pauley, Mary Polensky and Rosemary were part of the team, but did not limit themselves to that. Heather went to war against the cutworms that were devastating the clematis in the English garden. Be on the look out so they don’t move to do the same to the gorgeous blooms on the clematis in the Mediterranean bed. Craig worked with Jacob Morgan and new Rookie Tom Tucker (and others?) to straighten the bean teepee. I hear it still does not meet their expectations, but at least we don’t have the “leaning tower of beanza” anymore. Since Jacob has been “recruited” by Team Debra/Carol, I know he will keep it on the straight and narrow. The team dug in chicken manure and prepared the teepee and the pumpkin hoop for planting. Can’t wait to see what form the “pumpkins” will take this year!
