Getting Ready For Cover Crops

Judith Martin brought more cover crop seeds, so we are set to roll. We now have vetch, fava beans, red clover and will have winter rye next week. Lois Maynard sowed bed #4 after spending some time on the plants in the heeling bed. Marcia Pauley and Aimee McWhorter-Compton dug up the potato bed and found 3 which had escaped detection earlier. If there are still some hiding, they are now sharing their space with a cover. But Jim Rodman also dug up a potato from the turnip bed when he was preparing it and bed #10 for their winter cover. I saw that he had dug one last bag of turnips and Marcia took that to the soup kitchen with a very full bag of tomatoes which John Mikesell picked. Those plants, like the dahlias and daisies, are valiantly carrying on and don’t yet realize that their days are numbered in the single digits...
